This was the first part of the game a month project I worked on in 2020. I was inspired by a tweet of a toad spinning on a record player playing Dreams by Fleetwood Mac. Early on in the game a month project I was wondering where to get inspiration from for so many different games and turning silly social media posts into game ideas was one angle I thought could work well.

I loved the vibe of the video and so I thought for a bit about what part of it could be made interactive and the most interesting angle to me was to give the player control over the speed the record player played at but in a way that wouldn't be trivial. The player can't just play the song easily but at the same time I didn't want it to be so frustrating that the player couldn't enjoy the song and the games environment.

A fair bit of this project was working on the technical side of things making the record player spin properly and the other major half was setting up the environment the player would be in. Design wise there was really just one major problem I had to solve early on which did take some thinking and development.

The specifics of how the player spins up the record player was a little bit troublesome as I didn't just want the player to just walk forward and have it work perfectly. I wanted the player to have the try to do it correctly and to have the chance to play around with the silliness of doing it wrong. The solution I settled on was that the player needs to be facing tangential to the record while they run. This allows just enough difficulty with controlling the mouse that the song isn't always playing perfectly but when the player is in the flow it becomes quite easy to keep things going steady.
